TheĀ  Light of the World series is the 1954 Syllabus of Religious Knowledge in Scotland and based upon the Catechism of Catholic Doctrine (Penny Catechism 1933). This is the only known primary school textbook series which is written for the Penny Catechism.

THIS TEXT covers the matter set out in the 1954 Syllabus of Religious Knowledge for Primary 3 and 4 Classes.

The lessons with headings in red are intended for Primary 3 (ages 5-6) and those in blue for Primary 4(ages 6-7). Only the catechism answers marked with a cross need be memorised. The number in brackets after each Catechism answer indicates the number of that question and answer in The Scottish Catechism of Christian Doctrine. A lesson represents a unit of work. It does not indicate that the amount of matter contained in it should be covered in one class period.

Catechism answers marked * should be memorised, The answers marked with a cross will have been memorised in the earlier Primary classes but should be revised.The number in brackets after each Catechism answer indicates the number of that question and answer in The Scottish Catechism of Christian Doctrine.. Each chapter is a unit of work, not the amount of matter to be covered in one class period.
The short Life of our Lord Jesus Christ entitled, “Of His Kingdom there shall be no end” is not part of the prescribed syllabus but it embodies the chief passages from the Gospel with which children should be familiar. It develops the theme of the Church as Christ’s Kingdom and can be used as extra reading matter, or to illustrate the rest of the text.
